John was working as a farmer when he enlisted at Adelaide on 27 July 1918.
He embarked from Adelaide on board HMAT Boonah on 22 October 1918 but the troopship was recalled due to cessation of hostilities and John was returned to Australia arriving on 20 December 1918 and he was discharged on 31 January 1919.
