WIBBERLEY, Brian W

Picture
Surgeon-Captain
7th Loyal North Lancashire Regiment

'The Register Saturday 24 February 1917 page 14'
Captain Brian Wibberley, whose name appeared in the New Year list of military honours, having been mentioned and awarded the MC for conspicuous service during the Somme offensive, left South Australian on March 26, 1915.  He offered his services in answer to an appeal from British Headquarters for a number of Australian medical men to serve in the British Army.  Receiving the rank of 1st Lieutenant, and after having trained for two months at Torquay and on Salisbury Plain, he left for France as MO of the 7th Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, in which capacity he took part in the spring campaign of 1915.  He received his third star on the completion of his first year of service.  Captain Wibberley was transferred to a clearing station in September, after having been for 14 months with the L.M. Lancashire Regiment in France.  He is the only son of the Rev. Brian Wibberley, Mus. Bac., of Perth.  Educated at Prince Alfred College, he took his degrees in science, medicine and surgery at the Adelaide University.

At 36 and above recruitment age, Ted joined the Australian Red Cross –paying his own way to the Western Front in France, though with a bit of help from friends – such as the people of Benalla, who generously raised funds for a Chevrolet car, which he used widely in France.  His service was warmly appreciated by the ANZACs and Brits in France and England –as per a letter of appreciation in 1919.
Ted returned via America and on the way saw Californian bungalows – after returning to Australia, he went into land development and introduced this house style to Adelaide, in Tusmore and Burnside – plus the then village of Beaumont. His hobby was raising pigs – including introducing the now rare Wessex Saddleback breed to Australia.
