TREGOWETH, Frederick Joseph Arthur DCM

Son of John Thomas TREGOWETH and Mary nee NELSON
Of 37 William St Norwood, Sth Australia.
Frederick was living at Norwood and working as a teacher when he enlisted in Adelaide on 15 January 1916.
He embarked from Adelaide on board HMAT Seeang Bee on 13 July 1916 with the 3rd Reinforcements and served on the Western Front where he suffered a severe shrapnel wound in the abdomen on 6 April 1918. 
He was invalided to England for hospitalisation.  Frederick was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for gallantry in the action that had resulted in his wounding.  
CITATION FOR DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL.
'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. 
When all communications were interrupted, he went back mending the lines in six places, and delivered a message to battalion headquarters.  He then went forward mending the line, which had again been broken.  Later, he volunteered to take a message over 200 yards of open ground swept with machine gun fire, and, although wounded several times, struggled on and delivered his message.'

After his recovery he was not returned to his but served as a 1st Class Signaller in England until his return to Australia on board HMAT Kashmir arriving on 25 April 1919. 
Frederick was discharged on 2 June 1919.

Of 37 William St, Norwood, Sth Australia.
Thomas was living at Norwood and working as a shop assistant when he enlisted in Adelaide on 15 January 1916.
He embarked from Adelaide on board HMAT Seeang Bee on 13 July 1916 with the 3rd Reinforcements and served on the Western Front where he was wounded and captured at Reinecourt on 11 March 1917. 
He spent 13 weeks in hospital with shrapnel wound in the head whilst in Soltau PoW camp in Germany. 
Thomas was released on cessation of hostilities on 11 November 1918 and repatriated to England for recovery on 26 December before returning to Australia on board HMAT Plassy arriving on 23 April 1919. 
Thomas was discharged on 5 June 1919. 
Thomas is the twin brother of 1996, Sergeant Frederick Joseph Arthur Tregoweth, 48th Battalion, DCM.

'During the night attack on the enemy trench system near Morlancourt, on the night of 28th-29th July, 1918, after his company commander was early wounded, he assumed command of the company and pushed the assault vigorously home and after a tough hand-to-hand fight captured and consolidated the sector allotted him for the attack.  He then found a sap on his flank strongly held by the enemy, and at once attacked with a platoon, killing a large number and capturing twelve.  He next took out a patrol of three other ranks and rushed a well-wired position from which an enemy minenwerfer was firing - personally accounting for five of the enemy and capturing the minewerfer and the remainder of the garrison.  Throughout the action he displayed great courage and initiative, and his fine example greatly inspired his men.'
