STANBRIDGE, Charles Roy

Picture
Service no 297
Private
10th Battalion

Born Broken Hill December 1896, eldest son of Charles and Mary Anne Stanbridge.  He had six sisters and one younger brother.
Before enlisting he was a delivery man for JE Tregonings, Ironmonger in Broken Hill.  He was also a Corporal in the 82nd Infantry Battalion in Broken Hill.
After leaving Broken Hill on the first available train to Adelaide, he enlisted at Morphettville 21st August 1914.  H Company, 10th Battalion AIF.  (H Company later became part of C Company when the Battalion was reorganised early in 1915).
Embarked from Adelaide on HMAT Ascanius 20 October 1914, arriving in Egypt 4 December 1914.  Charlie celebrated his 20th birthday while training in Egypt.
As a member of the 10th Battalion, Charles landed at Gallipoli in the early hours of 25 April 1915.  He was killed the same day, along with two of his best friends, who he had known since primary school.
His friend Jack McCarthy wrote home to say that “Charlie was right up in the front line.  He was a game boy, and died doing his duty for his country. No man can do more. He always played the game, and was every inch a soldier and a man.”
Charles was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal, all posthumously.  He has no known grave.  He is commemorated on panel 33 of the Lone Pine memorial at Gallipoli.
