Private J R McIntosh, youngest son of Mr and Mrs McIntosh, of Grace Street, Unley, died of wounds received in France on April 15.  He was born in Duns, Scotland, in 1890, and came to Australia in 1900.  He was one of the firm of McIntosh & Sons, builders.  He enlisted for active service in October, 1914, and left with reinforcements of the 3rd Light Horse in February, 1915.  He served three and a half months on Gallipoli, where he contracted fever.  He was sent to Malta and then invalided to England.  On recovery he joined the A.M.C., where he did good work in the message department at Abbeywood Camp, England.  Later he was transferred to the 12th Battalion, and left for France on December 29.  He possessed a bright and unselfish disposition, and enjoyed the esteem of many friends.

He embarked for overseas with the 4th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 12 August 1916 aboard HMAT Ballarat. 
He saw action in France with the 48th Battalion before transferring to the 4th Field Company Engineers in July 1917. 
On 23 September 1917 he was wounded in action in France and evacuated to England and then onto Australia. 
He was discharged medically unfit on 25 January 1918.

'On the 2nd September 1916 these two men (5041 Private Darcy George LEE) during the attack near PERONNE were engaged on line maintenance duty.  They were stationed on lines forward of the Brigade Forward Station.  As the attacking troops reached their objective, they laid and maintained lines to Battalions.  ON the evening of the 3rd instant, the area through which the lines were laid was again intensely shelled with H H ang gas shells; but Sapper McKelvie and Private Lee worked continuously for many hours in the darkness wearing their box respirators, and restored communication again and again.  They displayed a standard of courage of the highest order. Through their perseverance, good communication was effected throughout the period.'

John is buried at Pont-de-Nieppe Communal Cemetery, France, (Plot 2, Row C, Grave 4).
