Roy and older brother Edward Broughton MARTIN SN 594  worked for Broken Hill Associated Smelters, Port Pirie when they enlisted in 1914 and were posted to 12 Battalion AIF. They were among the first ashore at Gallipoli 25th April 1915.
12 July 1915 the incompetent British Major General Hunter-Weston attempted for the third time to seize Achi Baba in the south. That same day at Anzac Cove a diversionary attack was aimed at drawing Turkish troops away from Hunter-Weston’s attack. Both Edward and Roy were wounded on this date most probably in the diversionary attack.
Edward received wounds to the face and eye but did not leave the Battalion, Roy was wounded in the head by a gunshot entering through the left jaw; he was evacuated to Malta then England and repatriated to Australia 7 Nov 1915. The wounding of the 2 men was reported in the Register 10 August 1915 page 6, column 1: Pt. E B MARTIN 594 12 Bat (Port Pirie West), Pt. R J MARTIN 1352 12 Bat (Port Pirie West) disembarked at Malta.
Edward survived Gallipoli and was shipped to France, 8 Apr 1917 Edward was reported by 3 Field Ambulance to have shell wounds to the shoulder region. 12 Apr 1917 he was transferred to 9 General Hospital with reported gunshot wound; back spine.
The Hospital Matron wrote responding to a request from Maude for more information: “He was admitted to this hospital on April 12th severely wounded in the chest. This shell also fractured the spine so that he was paralysed from the shoulders downwards. Edward passed away on the 21st April.
Roy died March 15th 1957
