Enlisted on his 18th birthday, left Australia on HMA Transport 'City of London' on 21 st September 1915 and disembarked in Egypt.  He then proceeded to Lemnos Island to join his Battalion, but found on his arrival that it had evacuated from Gallipoli.  For some time after returning to Egypt he was ill in hospital, and on his recovery took part in the defence of the Suez Canal. He then volunteered as a Machine Gunner, and was among the first Lewis Gunners to each France, where he was with the First Division in the famous battle of Pozieres.  He made the supreme sacrifice.  One of his comrades wrote of him 'No matter how weary, his sense of duty was so keen that he was one of the first to step out when volunteers were called for'.
