Of Harrogate, Sth Australia.  
Working as an assistant grazier when he enlisted at Adelaide on 5 November 1915.  
He embarked from Adelaide on 10 February 1916 with the 14th Reinforcements and saw action on the Western front where he transferred to 14th Field Artillery Brigade in April 1916 and then transferred to the 5th Light Trench Mortar Battery in July 1916.  
James was seriously wounded in the spine by shell pieces and was invalided to England with wounds to his back and paralysis to the legs.  
He was repatriated to Australia aboard Hospital Ship Pt Darwin arriving on 17 August 1918 with complete paraplegia and was discharged on medical grounds on 30 March 1919.   
James died in hospital on 22 May 1920 due to ongoing problems from wounds received in action.
