'During the period 29th September - 1st October 1918 in the attack by the Battalion on the Hindenburg Line at Bellicourt and the advance to Joncourt, Lieutenant Francis showed great courage, initiative and devotion to duty.  On the 29th September at a critical period in the operations his Company Commander was killed and Lieutenant Francis immediately assumed command and for the remainder of the three days led them with great skill.  Very heavy machine gun and shell fire was met with especially on the first day but his Company forced their way right on to the final objective.  His flank was open for about 3000 yards and he immediately swung his flank to form a defence.  On the 30th he again led his Company forward in face of heavy machine gun fire for nearly 500 yards.  ON the 1st October his Company once more attacked and captured and consolidated their final objective.   During the whole period Lieutenant Francis showed great powers of leadership and untiring devotion to duty.'

'Zeal and devotion to duty.  From the 27th July to 6th August 1916 at Pozieres and Sausage Valley.  This officer was constantly under shell fire superintending and arranging for the evacuation of wounded.  He was unsparing of himself and unremitting in his attention to all the details of the Medical Service of the Division.  The smooth working of the evacuation of sick after the capture of Pozieres Ridge was largely due to this officer's unremitting care.  Throughout the campaign similar thoroughness of work has been his characteristic.  On Gallipoli his behaviour was equally fearless & equally useful.  He was mentioned in Despatches while serving there.'
