Mrs. Brailey of Princes road, Mitcham, has been officially notified that her brother, Sgt. H A Cheney has been killed in action in France.
Sgt. Cheney left South Australia with the original 10th Battalion, and took part in the memorable landing on Gallipoli, with his brother, Lieut. E.L.
Cheney MC who is at present serving in the same Battalion (50th) in France.  He left Egypt for the western front in June 1916, and while serving in the
trenches ad the muscles of one of his ankles badly sprained.  He was invalided to England, and after his recovery went through the Chelsea School of
Instruction, gaining 135 points out of a possible 150.  He returned to France, and was killed in action on April 2, at the age of 26 years.  The
deceased was a prominent member of the Church of England Men's Society, and an energetic worker in connection with St. Michael's Church Mitcham, and St. Luke's, Adelaide.  He was of a bright and genial disposition, and although he had been only five years in the Commonwealth, had made hosts of friends.
He was connected with the Druid's Lodge, and has left three sisters - Mrs. J. Brailey, Miss Cheney, and Miss M Cheney, all of Mitcham.

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at HAUROY near BELLICOURT on the night 2/3rd October 1918.  The Battery position was subjected to a heavy bombardment with H E and Gas shell.  One shell fell in a gun pit setting fire to the camouflage and ammunition.  Sergeant CHINNERY at once rushed to the gun pit and proceeded to extinguish the fire.  His difficulties were added to as the ammunition was well alight and was exploding freely.  Ignoring this danger and the shelling which continued throughout he perserveered and eventually succeeded in getting the fire under control.  By his action Sgt. CHINNERY showed a splendid example of courage and determination and was the means of saving further destruction to material and ammunition.  He is not in possession of any decoration.'

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty from 25th February to 16th September 1918.  Sgt. CHINNERY in carrying out his duties, has shown fine soldierly qualities of decision, coolness under fire at all times devotion to even the smallest of his duties.  On the night of 15th September 1918, when the Battery was subjected to considerable enemy fire an ammunition dump was set alight. Acting with promptness and energy Sgt. CHINNERY, though suffering from painful burns from a bursting shell, completed alone the task of extinguishing the flames.'
