"I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me "
Lieutenant
No. 36 Squadron, R.A.F.
He was awarded the Military Cross in January, 1918 “for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He carried out a large number of night bomb raids on enemy headquarters, aerodromes and railways with great success. Many of these flights were carried out in bad weather and at very low altitude. On one occasion, although he had engine trouble and his radiator burst when he was over the enemy lines, he continued his flight and bombed a railway station from 1500 feet. He set a fine example of determination to his squadron.” He was later recommended for a bar to his cross.
After surviving a year of night bombing operations in France he was rotated for a rest on “home defence” duties. He was conducting instructional duties when he was killed in a flying accident at Ashington Aerodrome, just outside Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Biographical Particulars. THE LATE PRIVATE R. WATSON. Crystal Brook, June 8.
Expressions of regret were heard, on all sides when word was received on Saturday last that Private Roy Watson, of Crystal Brook, had been killed in
the Dardanelles. Private Watson was the first man to volunteer from Crystal Brook. He was employed in the office of the Waterworks Department, and was
very popular. He went to Egypt with the Light Horse Division. He was educated at the Crystal Brook public school and later at Gladstone and Port
Pirie high schools. At the latter he was prominently connected with rowing matters, being a member of the team that won the Public Schools' Champion
Fours a few years ago at Adelaide. He was also connected with lacrosse, and was selected as South Australian goalkeeper in the abandoned match versus
Victoria. He was much interested in tennis, and football, and was very popular. He was a member of the Crystal Brook Literary Society.

He repelled three counter-attacks by the enemy. He also prevented the enemy from getting ammunition to a hostile machine-gun, which eventually had to stop firing. On the night of the 2/3rd he pushed out and linked up with the right battalion.' Mr and Mrs Joseph Marshall Watson, of Botting-street, Albert Park, Woodville, have been notified that their son, Company Sergeant-Major Joseph (Joe) Charles Watson, died of wounds on May 12 at the Third Casualty Clearance Station, France. Company Sgt-Mjr Watson, who was 23 years of age, was born at Albert Park and educated at the Alberton school. He was very popular and held in high esteem by many friends. He was a fine athlete, and well-known in sporting circles, especially football. At the age of 17 he commenced his football career, playing with the Port Adelaide Senior Football Club until his time of enlistment. He played with the last South Australian interstate team, and was playing in the football carnival in Sydney when war was declared. He enlisted on September 10, and left South Australia on October 20, 1914, with the original 10th Battalion, and fought right through the Gallipoli campaign, afterwards going to France. He took part in the capture of Pozieres, and fought with great courage during that attack. For some time after this he was acting in command of his platoon, which did not have an officer. He landed at Gallipoli as a private, and gradually worked his way up to company sergeant-major. On November 28 he was taken dangerously ill with pneumonia, but was so keen to get back to the firing line that instead of taking his furlough he went straight back to the trenches. This is the second son to make the supreme sacrifice, another brother, Spurgeon, having fallen at Gallipoli on May 7, 1915. Still another son, Fred, is serving his country somewhere in France with the Machine Gun Section, attached to the 43rd Battalion.
