While serving in France with the 5th Divisional Mechanical Transport Company, he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 7 October 1918. Cerebo-spinal meningitis has taken yet another valuable life, that of Private Henry Gordon Veit, aged 19 years, the son of Mrs J. V. Larson, of Austral terrace, Malvern. He was a member of the 7th Field Ambulance, and was taken ill on January 5, after he had spent four months in the trenches. He died in hospital at Egypt on February 5. He was secretary of the Young Men's Bible, Class at the Manthorpe Memoral Church, and he also belonged to the Unley Boy's' Club. Private Veit, prior to enlisting, was employed at "The Advertiser' office as a compositor, having been with the firm for over six years. He was highly valued by his employer, and was loved and respected by his fellow-workers.
