He was admitted to the Endell Street Hopsital in London on 16th September 1915. Wesley took just over a year to recover in England. Wesley was transferred into the 16th Battalion on 6th September 1916 and proceeded to France. He was made a Lance Corporal on 22nd June 1917.
Wesley was awarded the Military Medal on 1st October 1917
"This non commissioned officer is brought under notice for gallant conduct and splendid behaviour during operations near Onherike(?) on the 26th September 1917. During the attack he led his section forward with steady coolness which inspired confidence in his men. Soon after reaching the RED LINE his section of trench was very violently shelled by the enemy. He thoroughly appreciated the situation and took his men forward to shell holes, where the fire was less intense and so undoubtedly saved many lives. He is recommended for distinction. E. G. Sinclair Maclagan Maj. Gen. Commanding 4th Australian Division."
Wesley was killed in action in France on 1st April 1918 at Hebuterne by a sniper's bullet.

'From September to December 1918 this Warrant officer has done consistently good work both in the line and when his Battalion was in billets.  When acting as Regimental Sergeant Major he has had charge of the Battalion dump in the line and worked between there and advanced Battalion Headquarters, carrying out his duties efficiently often under shell fire.  As Sergeant Major of his Company he performed his duties in a most concientous manner.  His services to the Battalion have always been of a particularly high standard, and his bravery in action and devotion to duty have been inspiring to all.'
Returned to Australia: 30 July 1919 per ‘Swakapmund’
Discharged: 22 September 1919
