Awarded D.C.M. & Military medal.
Whilst his battery was in action, it was heavily bombarded by the enemy with gas hells, and Sgt. Stewart has badly gassed, but declined to leave his post, as the strenghth of the battery had been much reduced by casualties.  At a later date of the engagement, when the whole of the gun detachment had become casualties from the explosion of a hostile shell, he went, without hesitation and on his own initiative, to the gun, and kept it in action until another detachment arrived.  The fine example of this capable and fearless N.C.O. was worthy of the highest praise.

'For gallantry and devotion to duty during the operations to the east of YPRES on 15th October, 1917. This man was in charge of a Bearer Squad and in the evening of date mentioned he was called upon to clear a temporary congestion of wounded at a R.A.P.; he at once took his squad forward through a heavy barrage and worked until the post was clear. In doing so he had to pass twice through the barrage. He set a very fine example of pluck and endurance throughout the operations from 12th/20th October, 1917.'
