Whilst his battery was in action, it was heavily bombarded by the enemy with gas hells, and Sgt. Stewart has badly gassed, but declined to leave his post, as the strenghth of the battery had been much reduced by casualties. At a later date of the engagement, when the whole of the gun detachment had become casualties from the explosion of a hostile shell, he went, without hesitation and on his own initiative, to the gun, and kept it in action until another detachment arrived.
