Private N. C. PEDERSON, who was killed in action on May 30, was a native of Norway, 31 years of age. He had no relatives in South Australia and when he went into camp in May 1915, he came into friendly contact with Salisbury residents, and was given a farewell social there before he left for the front. He made the town his home when he returned invalided after being severely wounded in August, 1916. He left for the front in August, 1915, and was amongst the first Australian troops to enter France, where he remained on duty till he was wounded. He arrived back in December, 1916, and again left for the front in June, 1917. He had not long been at the front when he met his death. Before coming to Autralia he had been a sailor, and had had much whaling experience in Greenland. He was also on board timber carriers between America, England, and Australia, and arrived here about five years before the outbreak of the war. After being in casual, employment for some time he obtained a position in the Railway Department at Oodnadatta, from which place he enlisted. He was held in the highest respect by all who know him.
