Sergeant H. J. PALMER, B Company 5th Battalion, second son of Mrs. L. and the late C. G. Palmer, of Haslam, West Coast, was killed in France on September 27. He was born at Nailsworth. and received his education at Nailsworth School. He enlisted in February, 1915, and left for Egypt on April 20. He went to Gallipoli with tbe 5th reinforcements to the 10th Battlion, and served there for five months. He spent Christmas Day on Lennos Island. He was transferred to Tel-el-Kebir with the 50th Battalion, and afterwards was for several months training on Salisbury Plains. He was wounded on the Somme front, and was invalided to York Hospital. Then he spent several months at Codford Camp and Lyndhurst, learning bombing. He gained a certificate for efficiency, and rejoined his company, with which he remained until his death. Sergeant Palmer was engaged in farming at Kangaroo Island and on the West Coast, where he was a general favourite.
