"From Memory's page time cannot blot, three little words - Forget Me Not"
“For conspicuous courage and devotion to duty. On the 31st August, 1918 near Peronne, he, with another Linesman, was attached to the 15th Infantry Brigade for the purpose of maintaining that part of the line between Division and Brigade which ran from Barieux to the Brigade Headquarters N.E. of Barieux. His companion was wounded and evacuated early on the morning of the 31st August. Sapper Nickolls continued his duties alone for a period of 15 hours without rest. The cable he had to patrol ran across country which was subject to an almost continuous barrage from the enemy. The line was continuously out and Sapper Nickolls was kept fully employed in repairing same under heavy enemy artillery fire until he became completely exhausted. It was undoubtedly due to his perseverance, devotion to duty and disregard for personal safety that a valuable line was successfully maintained during the operations.”
