He was awarded the Military Medal in October 1918.  “During the period 29th September to 1st October, 1918 in the operations carried out by this Battalion in the Bellicourt Sector against the Hindenburg Line, Private McFarlane showed great bravery and devotion to duty.  As H.Q’s runner he carried messages continuously during the whole period, often under extremely heavy machine gun and artillery fire.  During the morning of the 29th September when the battalion was in a very critical position, most of the messages from the Battalion Commander were carried by this man without regard to danger, and his work was of the utmost value to the success of the operation.  He has at all times carried out his duties excellently in the line, often in the face of heavy gun fire.”

McFARLANE, Roderick Andrew

Picture
Service no 1
Lieutenant Colonel
3rd Light Horse Regiment

Born 23 August 1880 at Naracoorte, SA
Son of Alexander McFARLANE and Margaret nee McIVOR
A a farmer and Drill Instructor ALH  when he enlisted 19 August 1914 at 34 years at Naracoorte, SA on  19/08/14 and is cited in the Chronicle January 1915 as being the first man in South Australia to enlist. His service number is 1.

He and a cousin, Sidney Kidman of Lucindale, had both previously enlisted for the Boer War with the 8th Battalion Commonwealth Horse and had sailed on SS St Andrew in 1902 for South Africa to arrive at Durban as the war ended without serving on land.

He was commissioned three weeks after landing at Gallipoli.

Roderick served in both the 3rd and 4th Light Horse in Egypt, Gallipoli, Palestine, Port Said, Damascus, El Salt, Jordan  and eventually had leave in England. He was promoted to Adjutant 3rd Light Horse on the voyage home and became Captain before he arrived home. He was hospitalized a few times in Egypt with malaria. His horse, Nipper, a blood relative of “Erskine” , (a steed presented to King George V in 1922 by the South Australian Governor), was killed from under him while in action at Damascus and Roderick was slightly wounded.

While stationed in Cairo he was introduced to Queenslander, Sister Esther Mary Ann  Moore at Shepheards Hotel and a relationship grew between them as he visited a sick friend who was being nursed by her at 69th General Hospital Alexandria. They both returned to Australia on the ‘Hungaria” , embarking May 1919. They married at Scots Church, in Melbourne 1920, had six children, four of whom served in ww2, and enjoyed over forty years of happily married life. Roderick remained in the army as a career soldier, serving at Keswick Barracks during WW2. His last Anzac Day march was in 1964. He lived until 1970, nine years after Esther died. Roderick and Esther are buried side by side at Centennial Park Adelaide in the AIF section.

Served in France.
He was wounded on July 29, 1918 resulting in the amputation of his left arm.

He was awarded the Military Medal for his services in the attack that led to the amputation of his arm.  “During the night attack on night of 28th/29th July 1918, astride the BRAY-CORBIE Road, Sergeant McGovern exhibited great bravery and devotion to duty.  Sergeant McGovern displayed splendid dash and initiative throughout the attack and rendered his company valuable assistance.  His work with the platoon while getting into a difficult position for jumping off was excellently done and during the attack he displayed great powers of command, particularly in closing up a gap in the company lines and in dealing with a Bosche strong point which necessitated working partly in our own barrage.  Sergeant McGovern, though severely wounded in the arm, continued to carry on for a time but finally had to give in owing to the extreme severity of the wound, which resulted in the loss of an arm.  His splendid example and heroic conduct has become a by-word among the men under his command and is worthy of the highest praise and recognition.”

He returned to Australia aboard the “Czaritza” in March, 1919.
