Heinrich became a blacksmith when he left school.  He served his apprenticeship at Hamilton, approx 25 kilometres from his home.  His only means of transport to and from work was by bicycle.  He served in WW1 in the 43rd Battalion where he was wounded and on returning, he married Mary Jane Hickey.  They had no children.  They left Waterloo and moved to the South East to work on a farm with his wife's brother Jim Hickey at Bool Lagoon near Naracoorte, SA. His occupation was listed at Wheelwright on his Army application.
