During the construction of bridges across the SOMME at HALLE near PERONNE on 31st August and 1st September 1918, Sapper KNEEBONE by his courage and determination made a most valuable reconnaissance for a bridge. Despite repeated salvoes of 6" and 8" shells Sapper KNEEBONE stuck to his work and pushed across the rive in front of our line coming into full view of the enemy on the opposite bank, and under heavy machine gun fire, carried on and completed the reconnaissance, thereby securing the information necessary for the construction of the bridge. He then assisted in the construction of the bridge under shell fire and afterwards volunteered to take back very necessary information relative to the progress on the bridge, which he succeeded in doing. The bridge was used extensively for the passage of infantry during the operation. The service rendered by him was of the highest order.'
