HONORING SOLDIERS.
On Wednesday afternoon an informal gathering of postal officers was held ¡n the accounts branch, General Post-Office, to bid farewell to Major J. J. Hughes and Lieutenant S. A. Uffindell, who are departing for the front with the 27th Battalion. A.I.F. A suit case and a miniature camera were presented to Major Hughes and a wristlet watch and a fountain pen to Lieutenant Uffindell, as tokens of the high esteem amid good wishes of their colleagues in the department. The Accountant (Mr. E. G. Terrill), Messrs. C. Miller, and W. P. Evans referred to the merits of the two gentle- men, who had for a number of years been officials of the accounts branch. It was stated that the Postal Department in this State could not possibly send two more worthy representatives to fight for the Empire. Hearty cheers for the guests concluded the gathering.

Private V. A. R. HURCOMBE, of the 48th Bat talion, who was reported killed in action in France on October 12, was the younger of two sons of Mrs. F. E. Davies, of Brighton. Both left for the front last year. He was 19 years and 9 months old, and was born at North Norwood. He attended the North Norwood school, and was employed by Messrs. Wilkinson & Co. for three years. He then resided at Kangarilla. From the outset of the war he was anxious to serve his country, and eagerly waited his 18th birthday. Soon after gaining his parents' consent he enlisted. He was a fine athlete and his affectionate disposition endeared him to all.
