Picture
Service No 3260
Driver
16th Battalion

Born 07 December 1893 at Kanmantoo, SA
Son of Francis FEIRCLOUGH and Emily nee FRY
Of Kanmantoo.

He embarked from Adelaide on board HMAT Benalla with the 11th Reinforcements and saw service on the Western front where he was transferred to 11th Field Artillery Brigade.
On the 6 October 1917 he was awarded the Military Medal for conspicuous gallantry in action.
Driver Feirclough was twice wounded in action, the second occasion he received severe shell wounds to the neck, face and left knee and was repatriated to England.
He returned to Australia aboard HMAT Marathon arriving on 1 January 1919 and was discharged medically unfit due to shell wound to the left knee on 9 March 1919.

CITATION FOR MILITARY MEDAL
'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.
On 6 October 1917, when in charge of a general service wagon load of general stores and material for his Battery at TOKIO (east of Ypres), a very heavy barrage was put down on the only road available.
Notwithstanding the heavy and concentrated fire, Driver FEIRCLOUGH - knowing the stores were urgently required – made repeated attempts to reach his Battery.  It was not until both his horses were killed under him and he himself was blown off the road that this Driver was compelled to relinquish his task.  His conduct on this, and other occasions, has set a splendid example to all ranks.'
