'On the night of 16/19th October 1917 near Broodseinde this man showed great gallantry and energy in laying and maintaining forward and flank telephone lines.  The enemy put a heavy barrage on the Ridge, cutting all lines but one.  Pte. Dougherty in company with another linesman Pte Pike went out and under this heavy fire searched for the ends of the wires which were blown far apart.  They succeeded in finding and repairing these to the front line, support line and flank Battalion, working under tremendously adverse conditions owing to the intense darkness and wet ground and at great personal risk owing to the heavy hostile fire.'
